From the US to Italy
Many Americans move to Italy without changing jobs: they want to keep working for their US company from Milan, Rome or a smaller town. That is possible, but it needs an Italian employer and a work permit, not a tourist stay.
Short stays are not work
Entering Italy for a short visit does not authorise working for months from Italy [confirm Schengen short-stay rules for US nationals]. Long periods of work from Italy also create tax and social security obligations.
The usual route
The EU Blue Card, with us as Italian employer: your US company sets your role and salary, we sign the Italian contract and run payroll.
Invoicing in USD
Your US employer pays one monthly invoice in USD at the EUR reference rate, with no FX spread: €250 per month plus your employment cost.
What changes for you
- You become an Italian employee: INPS pension contributions, public health care, at least four weeks of paid leave, 13th month and TFR severance.
- Your pay is stated as an annual gross salary (RAL) in euros. The net pay calculator shows what you take home.
- US citizens remain subject to US tax filing [confirm with a US tax adviser; foreign earned income rules].
Already American and Italian? Then no permit is needed: we only provide the Italian contract and payroll.
