Bringing Your Family to Italy: Income, Housing and the Blue Card Advantage
Last modified on November 5, 2026 • 5 min read • 1,037 wordsFor most of the people who write to us, the move is a family decision. A spouse with a career, children in school, sometimes an elderly parent. The question is rarely “can I work in Italy?” and more often “when can they come?”.
Italian law answers that in article 29 of the Immigration Act, and for Blue Card holders in article 27-quater, paragraph 16. Here is how it works in practice.
Who can join you
Article 29, paragraph 1 lists four groups:
- your spouse, not legally separated and at least 18 years old;
- minor children, unmarried, including your spouse’s children and children born outside marriage, with the other parent’s consent where required;
- adult children who depend on you because of a health condition causing total disability;
- dependent parents who have no other children in the home country, or parents over 65 whose other children cannot support them for documented serious health reasons.
Partners who are not married, siblings and other relatives are not on the list.
The income test
You must show lawful annual income of at least the yearly amount of the assegno sociale, the Italian social allowance, increased by half of that amount for each family member joining. If you are bringing two or more children under 14, the minimum is twice the yearly assegno sociale. Income of relatives living with you also counts.
We do not quote the 2026 amount of the assegno sociale here until we have read it on the INPS notice. The point is how to prove income: an Italian employment contract, monthly payslips and, later, the annual CU certificate are the standard evidence. When we are your employer, we provide all three.
The housing check
You also need a home that meets health and hygiene standards and is suitable for the number of people who will live in it. The municipality checks it. If a child under 14 is joining one parent, the owner’s consent is enough.
Two practical consequences. A small studio that is perfect for you alone may fail the check for a family of four. And a temporary furnished flat may be fine for your first weeks but not for the reunification file. Choose the long-term lease with the final family size in mind.
The Blue Card advantage
For ordinary permits, timing and conditions of reunification depend on the type and length of the permit. For a Blue Card, article 27-quater says reunification is available whatever the duration of the permit. Family members receive a permit of the same length as yours, which can later be converted into a work, self-employment or study permit if they meet the conditions.
In practice this means you can start the family file as soon as your own permit and housing are in place, without waiting for a minimum period of residence.
Documents: start now
The family file is document-heavy and slow: marriage certificate, birth certificates of the children, proof of dependency for parents. Documents issued outside the EU need legalisation or apostille and a certified Italian translation. Check that names and dates match exactly across all of them and the passports.
Start collecting them when the job offer is likely, not when you land.
Beyond the permit
- School. Public schools teach in Italian; international schools exist in the larger cities. School and housing choices are linked.
- Health. Each family member enrols in the national health service once they hold a permit.
- Tax code. Every family member needs one.
- Your payslip. Fringe benefits are tax-free up to €2,000 a year for employees with dependent children in 2026, against €1,000 otherwise. Ask the company employing you whether it uses them.
What your employer abroad can do
Pay a salary that leaves room for the income test, and agree a relocation budget that includes family travel and temporary housing. Everything else, from employment letters to payslips, we provide as the Italian employer.
See our family reunification page , or tell us about your family and we will map the steps.
What readers ask
Can my spouse come at the same time as me? It depends on the route and timing. Often the main applicant goes first, sets up housing and income evidence, then the family file starts. Ask us whether joint timing is possible in your case.
Does my spouse’s income count? Income of relatives living with you can count toward the test, according to article 29.
Do children need Italian to start school? No, but schools will expect them to learn it. Many schools offer support for new arrivals; ask the school directly.
What if my income changes later? Reunification is checked at the time of the application. Keep your payslips and CU certificates: they are also needed when family permits are renewed.
