Do You Need to Speak Italian to Work in Italy on a Blue Card?
Last modified on November 5, 2026 • 5 min read • 945 words“Do I need to speak Italian?” is one of the first questions on every call. The honest answer has two parts: for the permit, no; for life in Italy, it helps a lot.
The permit
The conditions for the Blue Card in article 27-quater are about qualification, contract length and salary. There is no Italian language requirement to obtain it. The same is true for the employment contract: if you work for a company abroad in English, your job can be in English.
Other permits, especially long-term residence permits later on, may involve language requirements. We will cover them when relevant to your case.
The contract
Your Italian employment contract is a legal document under Italian law. We prepare it in Italian and English, so you understand exactly what you sign. In case of doubt, the Italian text prevails, which is normal for a contract governed by Italian law.
Payslips and payroll
Italian payslips use Italian terms: competenze, trattenute, netto, TFR. We explain them once, in English, and answer questions in English afterwards. See your first payslip .
The offices
Immigration desks, the Questura, the municipal registry and local health authorities work in Italian. Some staff speak English, many do not. Forms are in Italian. For the employer-side appointments, such as the stay contract, we are there with you.
Landlords and daily life
Many landlords and agencies in big cities speak English, but leases are in Italian. Doctors in large cities often speak English; pharmacies, shops and neighbours less so. School communications for children will be in Italian.
Most people who move with basic Italian find the first months much easier than those who move with none.
How fast can you learn enough?
That depends on your languages and how much time you invest. Speakers of Spanish or Portuguese find Italian approachable; Brazilians often understand a lot from the start. Speakers of other languages need more time, but basic survival Italian is reachable in a few months of steady practice.
Practical tips
- Start before you move. An evening course or an app for a few months before departure pays off on arrival.
- Learn the admin vocabulary. Words like permesso di soggiorno, codice fiscale, residenza, contratto di locazione, medico di base. You will hear them every day.
- Take a course on arrival. Many cities have courses for foreigners, some free.
- Ask your employer. Language training can be offered as a benefit, and an employer-paid course can be structured efficiently.
- Use your colleagues. If you have Italian colleagues, ask them to speak Italian with you for small talk.
For the company employing you
If you want the person to integrate quickly, offer an Italian course as part of the relocation package and give time for it during the first months. It is a small cost compared with the value of an employee who settles in and stays.
What we do
We work in Italian and English, prepare bilingual contracts, explain every document and accompany you to employer appointments. Through our relocation service we can also handle the paperwork in Italian on your behalf. See relocation .
In short
No Italian required for the permit or for an English-speaking job. Some Italian makes the first months easier and the rest of your stay richer. Start early, keep it practical.
Common follow-ups
Will my employer pay for Italian lessons? It can, if agreed. We can run it through payroll.
Is English enough for a doctor’s visit? Often in big cities, less so elsewhere. Bring a translation app and medical vocabulary.
Do children learn fast? Usually much faster than adults. Schools can help with language support.
Is Italian required for the CIMEA statement or documents? Documents must be translated into Italian, but you do not need to speak it. Certified translators handle that.
Will I need Italian for a renewal? The Blue Card renewal is based on your job and salary. Language requirements may matter for other permits later; we will tell you when they become relevant.
Are there English-language public services? Some city portals and services offer English pages, but most procedures are in Italian. Keep a bilingual friend or our team close for the first appointments.
