# The Codice Fiscale: Your Italian Tax Code Before and After Arrival

> What the Italian tax code is, why your contract, payroll, lease and bank all need it, and how newcomers on a work visa get one.

Every newcomer to Italy learns the phrase *codice fiscale* in the first week. It is a 16-character code that identifies you to the tax agency, and it is required for almost everything: your employment contract, payroll, health service enrolment, a lease, a bank account, often even a phone contract.

## What it is

The codice fiscale is issued by the *Agenzia delle Entrate*, the Italian tax agency. It is derived from your name, date and place of birth and sex. It does not change, and it does not by itself mean you are tax resident in Italy.

The code is printed on a card or paper certificate, and later on your health card.

## When you get it

There are three common moments:

- **Before arrival**, through the Italian consulate in your country, which can request the code for people who need it.
- **At the immigration desk**, during the permit process, where the code is often assigned.
- **At a tax agency office** in Italy, with your passport and visa.

Ask your employer which applies in your case. If you already have a code from a previous stay or study in Italy, it stays valid: do not request a new one.

## Why payroll needs it on day one

Your employer must notify your hire to the authorities electronically before you start work, and the notification needs your tax code. The same code is used for every monthly payroll filing, for your INPS contributions and for the annual CU tax certificate. Without it, the hire cannot be filed properly.

That is why, as your Employer of Record, we ask for the code early, and help you obtain it if it is missing.

## Common problems

- **Name spelling.** Names transliterated from other scripts, or long names with several parts, can be recorded differently on the passport, the visa and the code. A mismatch causes problems at the bank and the Questura. Check it the day you receive the code.
- **Duplicates.** People who requested a code at a consulate and again in Italy sometimes end up with two. Only one is valid; the tax agency can fix it.
- **Family members.** Each family member needs their own code, children included. Request them when the family file starts.

## The code and your tax position

Having a codice fiscale does not make you tax resident. Tax residence depends on where you live and register, and for how long. As an employee, income tax is withheld through payroll, so most people never file anything themselves. You receive the CU certificate every year, and you file a return only if you have other income or want to claim deductions. If you have income or assets in your home country, ask an adviser about the interaction between the two systems.

## The health card

Once you enrol in the national health service, you receive a health card that also carries your codice fiscale. It is the card you show at pharmacies and doctors.

## Quick checklist

- [ ] Code requested or confirmed before the stay contract
- [ ] Spelling identical to the passport
- [ ] Code sent to your employer for the hire notification
- [ ] Codes requested for each family member
- [ ] Health card received after enrolment

## A few quick clarifications

**Is the codice fiscale the same as a tax return number?** It is your general identifier for all tax and many administrative purposes, used on every filing.

**Can I get it online?** Some consulates and the tax agency offer remote procedures. Ask us which channel is fastest from your country.

**Do I need it to sign the employment contract?** Yes, the hire notification and the payroll set-up both use it, so it should be ready before your first working day.

**What if I lose the card?** The code stays the same. You can request a duplicate certificate from the tax agency, and the code also appears on your health card once you enrol.

**Is it secret?** No. It appears on contracts, payslips, invoices and medical prescriptions. Treat it like a name and date of birth: not confidential, but no reason to publish it.

**Does my employer abroad need it?** The company abroad does not. We use it as your Italian employer for every payroll and tax filing.
